The first thing I do every day is find a few moments of personal space to realign and recalibrate relative to the World. Not “my” world. THE World.
OK, the first thing I really do is brew a pot of coffee, taking that first sip and thinking: “Ahhhh.”
My second work-related activity each morning is plugging into the world. I read today’s news. Do you?
I crawl over a variety of news feeds. I scour the breadth and depth of opinion and perspective. I read about politics, governments, economics, health, science and technology, manufacturing. Yeah, OK, I look at sports scores and may sneak a peek at some fashion and foodie stuff, too.
That global information is my first daily “Aha!”
I refill my cup of coffee several times while reading. I start thinking about World Stuff impacting my day, my colleagues’ days, my customers’ contexts.
I begin taking a 10,000 foot eagle’s eye view of the landscape. I gain perspective on the people and situations which I may find to be annoying and perplexing.
When put into a far greater context than my own, the magnitude and relative importance of these issues shrink dramatically.
I set my own daily table relative to the bigger reality of what’s whizzing around the globe. Do you?
We are, after all, global citizens. In spite of our tendency towards shortsighted preoccupation with issues and people that can take on a dramatic life of their own.
Those global insights spur ideas for blog posts like this one. They are the basis for, what readers tell me, are my thoughtful posts and the perspective that I bring to their business tables. My thanks to you all.
What’s whizzing around in your own world-view?
Might your perspective expand beyond issues that seem to be sucking up all of your energy and preoccupying you with endless wheel-spinning? Are those issues earth-shattering plate tectonics along the San Andreas Fault or do they involve office politics and psycho-drama which need to be re-dished up each day?
The first thing I do every day is find a few moments of personal space to realign and recalibrate relative to the World. Not “my” world. THE World.
It’s all about inspiring each other instead of goading each other.
The World would be a far more peaceful place in the long run. It starts each day with folks like you and me.
What perspective will you take today?
