The power of defining your professional deliverables is grossly under-rated. However, understanding what and how you deliver to clients is the best piece of self-discovery you can focus on.
Why? Because once you understand your professional deliverables, so will your clients. Finally. Articulating the compelling case for why they do business with you – and continue to do so – is more than mutually fulfilling. It is business-building.
So, let’s get down to it. What are your professional deliverables?
Chances are, you will return, once again, to the stuff on your resume, your professional backstory. This stuff lists the accomplishments we think make us look credible to others. How many of your competitors use the same words, promises, value propositions and labels to position themselves?
Professional deliverables are the words, values and actions you incorporate into every professional touchpoint, regardless of your current job or function.
First, you bring these deliverables to every position you hold. Paid, pro-bono or volunteer. You cannot help yourself; your professional deliverables are hard-wired into your DNA.
Next, these deliverables are your common denominators and differentiators. Why? No one else delivers on them, quite the same way you do.
Then, when these deliverables are created in the service of A-List clients, remarkable and enduring client outcomes happen.
Finally, your deliverables are your professional barometer. For those times you try to be all things to all people. When, in fact, you should stick to your professional sweet spot. Those deliverables, over time, make you bullet-proof in the marketplace.
Ultimately, your professional deliverables are locked into compelling stories.
Now, this is the part that is messy. So, let’s go there, together, shall we?
Because far too many professionals associate their professional stories with failure. Something changed and the chapter of the story they were involved in ended.
I often encounter this mindset when coaching and consulting with professionals in search of innovation and re-positioning. However, what happens when you re-examine each and every professional chapter in your life? Instead of the baggage and bias and “Ouch” associated, cut yourself some slack. Stop beating yourself up.
What is the common professional denominator lurking in that story? Frankly, it is shining brightly, in spite of the end of each professional chapter. You accomplished some great outcomes, in spite of toxic co-workers and a dysfunctional environment. And your story continues, as a testimony to your professional worth.
Professional common denominators remain the same, throughout the story you tell.
Your professional common denominators ring true, for each job. They underpin your success in executing your professional deliverables. When you think about it, you really cannot escape what you bring to the table, professionally, every day.
Your professional deliverables truly are your gifts. Let their light shine.
When you begin to understand the power of defining your professional deliverables, you target workplaces, job opportunities, clients and colleagues who are exquisitely aligned with you.
That is your secret sauce for acquiring and retaining customers, isn’t it? Clients become more successful as a result of working with you, don’t they?
Isn’t it time to move one millimeter forward? Stop holding yourself back? Instead, become the type of professional of worth you truly are capable of becoming.
Start moving one millimeter forward, today.
