Today, let’s you and I have a chat about why it’s important for some of you to become comfortable being professionally uncomfortable.
Think about it.
Are you comfortable being professionally uncomfortable, or not?
Regardless of your professional discipline, your level of education or your current job function, you either crave comfort or target discomfort, in some way.
So, let’s dive right in. Are you a professional who tends to swim into uncharted waters? The unfamiliar? The unknown? The uncomfortable?
OK. Now, just how frequently do you enjoy swimming into what is uncomfortable? Continuously? Occasionally? Never, ever, are you kidding me, Babette?
Perhaps you are more comfortable following someone else’s lead, than you are taking off at the head of the line. There is nothing wrong with that tack. Unless….
The difference in how you respond to my questions is the difference between remaining in a risk-averse, order-taker role in your organization. Or, alternatively, targeting an innovative, leadership role.
Let’s continue our discussion on why it’s important for you to discover whether you embrace being professionally uncomfortable. Or not.
Consider whether your current professional role is fulfilling, or not. Perhaps you have a nagging sense that you are capable of contributing so much more to the workplace. However, your current position is restrictive. As a result, you are not allowed to color outside the lines of your job function – or at least not stray very far outside those lines.
What do you do next?
On the other hand, you continuously seek out new organizational challenges and initiatives! However, the rest of your colleagues do not share your enthusiasm. In fact, they are more comfortable – and complacent – operating within the confines of their departmental silos – and mindset. As a result, every time you propose a new idea, they shut you down.
How do you react? Isn’t this getting old?
When you realize you are comfortable being professionally uncomfortable, things start to change.
Isn’t it time to move forward, from the people, business models and mindset which hold you back from become a Professional of Worth?
Professional innovation starts by deciding how you would answer these two questions:
Do I want people to (continue) to ask me: “Babette, can you do this for me?” or do I want people to ask me: “Babette, what do you think about this scenario, situation, strategy, issue?”
Well, are you an order-taker or an innovator? And then, what do you want to do about it?
Yes, professional change is professionally uncomfortable.
Why be content to remain as good as you are, Today? When, in fact, you can become better and better Tomorrow, and in the Future?
