How much strategic business sense do your stories make?
As I worked with one of my clients yesterday, he complained that decision makers were not taking action after his presentations. He just could not understand why.
My question to him: “Do you tell connect the dot stories?” He looked back at me, puzzled.
If you want decision makers to make a decision, then tell stories which make solid strategic business sense. To them.
Do the buying and selling stories you tell, or your startup pitches to investors or on grant applications, have amorphous or fuzzy end points? Yup, even if you are a STEM professional or analytical thinker, the folks with the money to propel your own professional outcomes are looking for business value in your stories.
Consider the client experiences you create with the stories you tell to decision makers. Do you catalyze action or inaction? Do you leave decision makers wondering what the point of your story is: from their perspective, not yours?
If the only action decision makers take is no action at all, then your stories fall short of connecting the dots for them. Business makers anticipate being able to make solid business sense from the stories you tell.
Alternatively, when your stories take the long-view, and connect the dots, you create a dialogue with business decision makers. Then, you address the business outcomes they can anticipate when doing business with you and your startup or organization. When that connectivity and that storytelling magic happens, you not only acquire clients, investors and funding. You retain them, long-term, as well.
With a little rework, we can transform your professional stories into compelling reasons for decision makers to take the actions you want them to take. To do business with you. Because you and your stories make so much sense for the future of their businesses.
