Throwing Storytelling Spaghetti against the Wall does not Stick

storytelling spaghettiAre you throwing storytelling spaghetti at employees and clients? Hoping they glean whatever message they can? Not only from the story you tell, but also as a result of how you deliver that story to them? In terms of your own storytelling acumen, regardless of your job title, pay grade, level of education, generation or professional discipline.

Do you rely on canned content, which you may not have developed yourself, for strategic business and technical communications?

  • Consider that not all stories are equally relevant and impactful across all the constituents we serve.
  • Also, consider that not all stories are equally understood by everyone seated around the business table, listening to you tell that story.
If people do not understand what you are saying, due to the words you use or lack of story relatability, you throw storytelling spaghetti against the wall. That is risky.

Intentionally and purposefully select stories to present, even if they are not your own (not my preference). This strategy becomes your key to creating storytelling stickiness.

You do take the time to marry up the story’s message to the appropriate audience, correct? If not, the wrong story delivered to the wrong audience does not stick. And you become frustrated. So do your employees and clients. Consider the customer experience impact of the stories you currently tell. Then, take these next steps.
