2 Assumptions that derail Virtual Business Presentations

April 21, 2020 by Babette Ten Haken Leave a Comment

virtual business presentationsThese days, all of us either are participants or spectators in far too many virtual business meetings and presentations. What is the quality of the employee and customer experiences you create? Oh, and, I hate to tell you. Virtual meetings are here to stay because they are cost-effective.

However, there are two assumptions you make that derail the impact of your virtual business presentations. And the goal is creating an audience of virtually-engaged, active participants. Instead of repeating the pre-Covid19 presentation format which results in a bunch of spectator attendees.

These two assumptions are pretty basic common-sense ones, when you think about them. However, these two assumptions are the most ingrained in our professional mindset, behavior, habits, and biases. And the plethora of virtual business offerings, including full-scale conferences, only makes matters worse.

So stop. Take a One Millimeter Mindset™ moment. Consider the two assumptions which derail virtual business presentations. Then, choose to do things, differently, tomorrow to get you where you need to go. Together. One Millimeter at a time.
  • The first assumption is that you “think” everyone sitting around the virtual presentation table (in their jammies) processes information the same way you are trained to do. Business colleagues are not dominantly hard-wired to process the world the same way that you do. Especially, if you are a STEM professional or left-brain thinking analytical type. Not only that.
  • The second assumption is that you “think” everyone sitting around the virtual presentation table (this time in their sweats) speaks the same discipline-specific professional language that you do. And uses the same professional acronyms that you do. Why should they? The folks on the other side of the table have their own specific terminology and acronyms. And when you both sling around professional lingo like confetti at a New Year’s celebration, you once again successfully derail the impact of presentations.

Everyone’s time and attention are at a premium today. Because we are saturated by the poor quality and overwhelming quantity of virtual meetings and presentations. Will you choose to make meetings more worthwhile or the same as everyone else?
