If you are not invested in your own professional story, why continue to urge others to invest in your story? There just may be a disconnect of belief between what you say you do and who you really are.
You see it, I see it, we all see it. Taglines and keywords in LinkedIn profiles and professional resumes. Positioning professionals one way this week. Then, repositioning professionals another way next week. If one “strategy” does not work, well, let’s try another!
Or salespeople pushing the pre-scripted spiel of a quarterly campaign agenda. Only to change directions according to company directives the next quarter. And let’s not even consider the news we expose ourselves to each day.
Then again, do you rely on the chronology of professional titles listed in resumes and profiles to tell your entire professional story? Consider that potential employers and clients, especially today, have no time to connect whatever dots need to be connected.
When your own professional story shapeshifts, colleagues and clients will not invest in your professional inconstancy. Time to reverse-engineer the strategy and importance of your professional story?
What really matters is whether you, yourself, are invested in the trustworthiness and credibility of your own professional story. If you do not believe in You, and do not place your trust in You, neither will anyone else (or at least not for long).
After all, your own professional story is yours to own. And yours to tell. Not all professional experiences are perfect fairy tales, where you are the hero or heroine. And everyone lives happily ever after.
Consider that colleagues, employers and clients are not investing in superheroes. Rather, they invest in real-deal people to have their backs so they can make hard calls: today, tomorrow and future-forward.
Evaluate whether you dismiss the professional stories which define you because you do not play superhero roles. Or, alternatively, bury the stories which define you, due to embarrassing or toxic scenarios.
Ponder your relief when you become invested in your own professional story.
A story which never shapeshifts. So you do not have to remember what you said before, or script what you will say next time. When you own the professional stories which define you, your story stays the same. You finally understand the relevance and value of what you dismissed as insignificant or buried away due to toxicity.
When you make this decision, the chronology of your professional profiles becomes your story. A professional story you embody each day in the workplace. And a story colleagues and clients are co-invested in.
