Creating professional value, and measuring your professional value, focuses not only on what is measured tangibly. But also on the intangible value you create for colleagues and clients: Trust.
Mostly, you focus on those tangible measurements. Because employers determine the lines inside which you color to. So they perceive you to be valuable. As a result, your Key Performance Indicators, your sales quotas and numbers, take up a lot of your professional head space.
How many of you reading this blog post stop right there? Figuring that after you tick off all of “their” boxes, you deliver professional value? Collect the paycheck. End of professional story. Not so fast.
Then again, perhaps you feel use- or business-cases justify your professional value. In terms of fulfilling your individual KPIs and making your own numbers. Yet, again, your professional story is about delivering what your employer is measuring. So, once again, end of professional story.
However, some of you reading this blog post move beyond how Yesterday’s value is created and measured. Because you discover what is more important. To get to where you need to go, today, tomorrow and moving forward, more than metrics are involved. In fact, more than tangible measures always are involved.
Because creating professional value for colleagues and clients translates the value of trust as you create professional deliverables.
If colleagues and clients do not trust you, they do not buy into or comply with what is new, different and changing. Even if your analytics and efficiencies force people to act in accordance. Rather than create collaborative relationships between people. Including people across job titles, pay grades, levels of education, generations and professional disciplines.
So, ask yourself. Are you playing it safe and comfortable? Working with people inside your own professional discipline? Or working with people of the same or higher professional employment tier, in other departments with whom you typically collaborate? Alternatively, are you moving one millimeter beyond what is professionally comfortable? And purposefully determining just who you should have on your team. Whose voice and unstated user needs you should be incorporating into your design specifications?
The value of your professional outcomes is created the moment you understand that leading and serving your organization is about leveraging trust. To continuously create outcomes people buy into and comply with, because they recognize their stories and voices in those outcomes.
Frustrated by the direction your professional trajectory is taking? Consider how you leverage your professional value. Because getting to where you really need to go involves more than professional tools and job titles.
