Are you too professionally tired? Especially as you continue to ride the 2020 roller coaster of uncertainty and ambiguity. Realize that you are not alone. You have lots of company.
Of course you are competent, capable and resilient! No doubt about it. Also, you are great at showing up and working hard. You know the drill: carrying on carry on. Yet the weight of all that showing, working and carrying on takes a toll on you. In spite of your best efforts, as these pandemic months labor on, you are exhausted.
Especially as you balance work with family, setbacks, disappointments, frustrations and yes, even triumphs. You feel like you are running a never-ending marathon because the finish line keeps moving further away. The closer you get.
You are not alone. You never were. Because you and I and we all are running that never-ending marathon of change, right alongside you. Socially distanced, of course.
Shared conversations around professional overwhelm and exhaustion – like the one you and I are having today – are key elements leadership. A leadership focus recognizing our greatest strengths arrive in those one millimeter moments which find us when we least expect them to.
When you and I and our teams give themselves permission to move one millimeter beyond what holds us back. So everyone moves forward, together.
There. I just felt your shoulders relax. You sat back in your chair. And exhaled slowly. You just moved your first millimeter forward. Did you feel that, too?
When leaders self-acknowledge they are too professionally tired at this point in this amazing year, they also invite colleagues and clients to share their own concerns. So colleagues lend a helping hand to one another.
Depending on where we all sit around the organizational table, we all see and hear these stories of triumph, overwhelm and exhaustion. Differently. And recognizing our differences are our greatest resources of professional strength and opportunity. So, we better serve each other first. And thus, can better serve our clients, together. One millimeter at a time.
Moving forward, take a moment. Begin meetings by acknowledging that colleagues and clients operate at daily levels of being too professionally tired. Then make the smallest viable one millimeter steps forward you need to take, individually and collectively, to get to where you need to go. Together.
Because you are not alone.
At this moment, in this particular year, moving one millimeter forward can seem like moving forward one light year. Yet every tiny, one millimeter step forward we take, together, adds up over time. To have a big impact on getting us to where we really need to go. Together. One Millimeter Mindset. Because we are in this together. One millimeter at a time. Can you feel it too?
