Are you delivering human capital value to your organization? Constantly, continuously, accountably and responsibly? That’s a Big Idea and a question to ask yourself every day. Especially as the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel becomes brighter each day.
To get to where you really need to go, ask yourself bigger questions. You are worth it.
Human Capital Value describes the intangible qualities or assets which are not able to be included on an accounting spreadsheet. However, these intangibles are mission-critical to generating enduring client outcomes, a retained employee and client base, and marketplace longevity. Because the intangibles of human capital value include not only an employee’s experience. But also intangibles motivating each employee regarding health, professional development, purpose, ethics, values and so much more.
Taken within that context, everyone in your organization is responsible for delivering human capital value. First, to their teams, then their departments. Next to their cross-functional colleagues, partners and stakeholders. Also to their employer and finally to existing and future external clients.
Yet the phrase “human capital value” is daunting, isn’t it?
Wrapping your mind around how you deliver each day is like flailing away at a gargantuan, amorphous concept. Partially because your employer may not have adequately defined it to themselves, let alone adequately communicated what it means to you and for you.
However, you know the saying: “How do you eat a dinosaur? One bite at a time.” You control how you deliver each day, so everyone gets to where they really need to go. Together. One millimeter at a time.
- First, define your own human capital value: to yourself. If you are not valuable to yourself, how will others believe in you?
- Next, at the end of each day, add up all the small (and undoubtedly large) things you do which comprise your human capital value.
- Also, add up the value of all those certifications you earned during the pandemic. Which ones will you rely on, in delivering human capital value to your organization?
- Then, pose the Big Idea to an accountability partner. Or, alternatively, discuss with the one team with whom you have the best rapport. Compare and contrast how you deliver, individually and together.
I’d say you are on your way to answering an even bigger question. So everyone gets to where they really need to go. Together. One millimeter at a time. Ready to take your next one millimeter step forward, together?
