These are the individuals whom we trust implicitly due to their ethics, values, professionalism, and overall humanity. The Legend is more than the sum of their expertise and proficiency. Your day is always better because you know they are there, in the background, regardless of whether or not you need their help.
When one’s Legacy makes them Legendary to colleagues and clients, everyone has each other’s backs. Colleagues and clients become bonded in a community they perhaps are not aware exists… yet.
Our Legendary colleagues are the people with whom we compare football scores via a quick email or text on Monday morning. Over the years, we develop more than a professional relationship with them. Especially during the last two Covid years, we choose to trust and transition and share our best and worst fears with these trusted and ethical individuals. Our Legends are our most cherished friends.
And then these rare Legendary friends, our clients and colleagues, are taken from us too soon.
As colleagues and clients of the Legend come together to reassemble and reconstruct the nuts and bolts of the tremendous value created, we “meet” each other. Often, we discover our commonalities and our complete belief in and devotion to the individual who is our Legend.
On October 9, 2022, a rare Legend in my life passed away. Suddenly diagnosed with cancer only three weeks prior, he was gone in a heartbeat. His name was John Sawyer, known professionally as The Small Business Website Guy.
John was my trusted colleague, friend, and infinitely wise and talented webmaster and coder for over 8 years. I discovered John after a series of extremely poor relationships with webmasters of inconstant loyalties, priorities, and skills. It was like finding your soulmate after a series of bad boyfriend breakups. John was the guy for me. He “got me” instantly, including my quirkiness, creativeness, and over-analytical tendencies. Wow. John was so patient and so so incredibly wise.
When Your Legacy Makes You Legendary, everyone you touch becomes better personally and professionally.
I was set for extended travel when I had what was the last conversation with John. He let me know of the diagnoses and that things would be sorted out by the time I returned home. Then we would make plans for moving forward. John was gone by the time I returned. Neither one of us anticipated this would be our last conversation. It always seems to go that way, doesn’t it?
John respected my professional focus of speaking, mentoring, coaching and consulting about discovering and owning your professional legend. Ironically, he didn’t consider himself Legendary at all. He simply was doing what he loved to do in the only way he knew how to do it: legendarily. I am a far better business professional because of my collaboration with John Sawyer. I view our time together as a tremendous gift. Rest in Peace dear colleague and friend. I am heartbroken.
