Create your daily true north, then follow that path throughout each day.
Each workday often becomes an ever-increasing “to-do” list, doesn’t it? Even though you prioritize, meetings and crises and people get added onto your already-full plate. As a result, you become distracted and anxious that you will never get to the end of all the tasks left to be done.
That is why I create, and stick to, my Daily True North. You should, too.
Each morning I create a positive thought, as well as an image of that thought. I retain these in my mind as the day progresses. This thought and image combination becomes my Daily True North.
- When I catch myself becoming distracted or anxious about additions to my workload, I bring up that thought-and-image combo.
- If I become overwhelmed when each project deadline seems to fall on the exact same day as all the others, I stop and think about my thought-and-image combo.
- Most importantly, should I begin to doubt myself and my capabilities, I stop myself before I slide down that slippery slope.
As a result, I immediately re-focus on what is important to me: my Daily True North.
My Daily True North is firmly rooted within the personal side of my professional persona. Just that quick refocus on what is true is enough to quell any consternation I may have about workload, my clients, my team mates, and myself. Consequently, my Daily True North becomes a professional oasis throughout each day.
How about you? Will you give yourself permission to create your own Daily True North? This is a self-affirming means of balancing what is important to you personally with what is important about you to others professionally. You will discover that spending a few minutes each morning establishing your Daily True North is calming, reinforcing, and satisfying. As a result of better serving yourself first, you are better able to serve others to get to where you really need to go, together. One. Millimeter. Mindset.
